LESSON #14: Setting Goals for Your Business
In the previous lesson, we talked about getting a vision for your business.
A vision is the big picture of where you want to go. You need to have a vision, otherwise you won’t be motivated, and you won’t have a clear direction for your business.
However, a vision needs goals and plans to go along with it…
(Watch this video…)
Main points:
1) they should be specific (measurable)
2) they should be serious, but attainable
3) they should have a deadline
Action steps:
1) Write down one goal, and put it somewhere near your computer.
(Also please post it in the comments below)
It should be specific, attainable, and it should have a deadline.
Keep in mind that you will need to keep setting new goals for yourself as you build your business. As you continue with these lessons, it will become more apparent what your goals should be, so write them down frequently as you go through the process.
Now you will need to develop a plan for reaching your goals, and I’ll be talking about that in the next lesson.
As always, you are welcome to post your questions and comments below.
Have a great day!

Hi Eric and everyone,
Goal setting!
A myriad of thoughts enter my head as to what to set myself as a first attainable goal.Today is 19th July, by the way it’s my youngest son’s birthday,he’s 29! How the time has flown! For those of you that are parents I am sure you will all feel that sense of time having past so quickly especially at times like this. This ‘time’ element and it’s passing re-enforces what Eric comments about setting a deadline for me.The ‘back burner’ has an awful lot of my ambitions hopes and dreams on it!
Time then to bring them forward and make the Vision real; I see before me a ladder,a peculiar ladder, without any rungs!I am now holding this first rung(my first goal) in my hand;
‘BY 31st of December 2008 my bank account will show £250 (about $500) in the BLACK.’
It stands at present £2250 ($4,500) in the RED.Being clear of debt in my bank account means that I have one less worry to distract from my vision, the first rung on my ladder of dreams the first block of my jigsaw in place.I can’t remember the last time my bank account was in the black at the turn of the New Year, and am I 50!So I guess am saying ‘HELLO!’to the concept of that alien being.. Money management! I have written a plan out to achieve this number and await the next lesson to see if it needs adjusting or not.
It’s not a wild goal and by placing it here it will serve as a constant reminder to me of where my future fortunes turned for the better.
Thanks goes to all those that posted in the previous lesson,I read them all and personally replied to a couple.I felt humbled by the way you all bravely gave your own personal vision and shared it with people such as me and gave me further inspiration in doing so. And of course a BIG thankyou to Eric for this great blog of his.
Paul(UK)
Good goal, thanks!
Hi Eric
My short goal is to re-generate my income as of $1000 by 30 August 2008 with a full time online business. Go the time cause i’m out of work.
You promised 120 lessons - i want to run through then come back and take notes. Is eric’s tips new? why are lessons not available in abundance??
Please let me know !!
Eric’s Tips has been here since 2005, but this lesson series is new. I am posting them as I make them.
Can you please elaborate more on the diferrences between vision and goal
Thanks for all the tips
A vision is basically a mental picture (which can be written in words) of the end result of what you want to achieve. A vision is generally ongoing. It acts to guide you throughout your daily activities, and steer you in the direction you want to go.
A goal is a specific milestone along the way toward your vision. A goal has an end point. Once you reach it, it’s done.
Thanks Eric For clearing up some confusions
Hi Eric,
This is probably more of a plan than a goal put it is the one I would like to implement first.

Hi Eric,
Thanks for clearing up vision verses goal.I’m one of the guilty ones that was getting the two mixed together. It’s like a little light bulb turned on after watching this lesson. Although I have a BIGGER vision of being independently wealthy, a couple stepping stones I’ve set as longtime goals would be:
Pay my Townhouse off($200,000) by 02/15/2014
Work part-time at the Hospital by 02/15/2015
PS…hopefully more goals will come to mind(as you stated) as I develop my business.
Thanks Again
Gary
Sure thing. Yeah it’s easy to mix them, as I do too.
My first goal is to make $10,000 until 15 December 2008. Doing so, I’ll accomplish the goal in the vision to be debt free until the end of year 2008. I think will be very hard to do it but this goal is very special for me - my debts are time sensitive. I have to do it, and the date is 15 December 2008.
If I’ll go this, implicitly I’ll accomplish the second goal to get the stress of money out of my system which will be absolutely great.
Now this can be view more as a part of the plan, but I’ll make it as a sub-goal of the first goal because it is my week part: I have to increase my list with 1000 name until end of Dec 2008.
Regards
Michaela
My Goal is to bring 50 Lifestyle Minded Marketers to Costa Rica on August 29th- September 2nd, 2008.
And to give them the experience of a Lifetime;)
I am doing this at my special group costs and not for profit, so if anybody needs a business/ vacation event, this is it! Check iy out at the Tweetfest lunk above. And of Course Eric you are more than welcome, but I am sure it is a little to close to your Belize mission.. so next time! but check out the video at the link above! anyway that is my goal.. hey, you asked:) Pura Vida! Nico
Dude that looks awesome. I really wish I could go. Why is it called tweetfest? Makes it sound like a twitter event…
and the video is not loading for me…
Oh the video engine was undergoing maintenance, it should be working fine now. The video explains the concept and it is a Social Media MasterMind Event. So I am marketing word of mouth (Tweet to Tweet) to marketers using Twitter. Hence TweetFest! No-One has done it YET, and Twitter has become THE Social Marketing Tool, because of it’s micro-blog realtime capabilities. It has become a REAL Marketing Movement, I know you weren’t into Twitter a while back… but remember you said SOMETIMES you need to reassess!
Also, this link above is a Video of what I will be doing to help people Conquer their fear of Success! Talk about stop victimizing:)
Thanks Eric. I needed this! My first goal is to reach $1000.00 per month income by August 30th. Looking forwards to the PLANS video next!
Blessings,
Joy
Hi Eric,
I really do encourage the goal setting techniques that you suggest. Immediate and long term are what makes your program work. Zig Ziglar once told me that if you don’t set your 3 levels of goals, you can’t see where you are going and you will never know when you are there.
Ron B
Awesome. Zig certainly knows what he’s talking about
Hi Eric,
At this stage my first short term goal is to watch and learn from your 120 videos. And during that time, find a niche to build my business upon. That seems to be my biggest hurdle right now, so by the time your video series finishes, I will know exactly what niche I will be involved with.
Thankyou,
Marion
Glad to hear it, and I hope my lessons will help you get there.
Hi Eric,
As we along with you, we tend to understand more of your lessons but goals is the most difficult want. Today, we are striving to work & at the same time learning to make money Online.
Our goal to learn sucessfully ss to achieve our vision to make money Online & Offline.
It doesn’t matter even earning small amount at the begining but this will give us confidence the reality of Online businesses.
Ths, regards
Hi Eric,
My vision is to exceed powerseller status with ebay within 2 years after which I collect my super and retire from my present employment. As for goals, when I am designing a new product (which I love doing) I put a time limit on it e.g. a range of clocks to be completed by the end of the week etc. or I might say to myself that certain new products be added to my website, http://www.corgidogworld.com by the end of a particular month. Hope this makes sense. I enjoy reading the lessons.
Thanks,
Kay
My goal is to learn all the facts & secrets to internet traffic that I would have 300 plus visitors to my new site http://www.secretmoneybox.com every day generating at least 6 sales a day, by August 30 2008
Mark Sansom
I will achieve my goal !!!
thanks again Eric
Mine is a moderate one I know…
i.e. $300 per month by 31,st December 2008 and become financially free…

Vision & Goals is a “drive force” for us to move forward. Vision & goals should be realistic, achievable & deadline.Without vision & goals, you’ll never achieve your dreams.
Never give up to realise your vision & goals. Prioritize your goals according follow by short term, mid term and long term goals.
Reviewing is important for us to “re-schedule” our vision & goals. Never repeat the same mistake.

My #1 GOAL;…….
To make £40,000 (GBP) within one year through internet marketing so that I can purchase outright the house I desire.
PS. I did goal-setting using the Joe Karbo ‘Dyna-Psych’ method 22 years ago.
It was SO successful that it frightened the life out of me. I knocked it on the head as it was propelling me ‘faster’ than I comfortably wanted to go.
I’m now ready for a more ‘relaxed’ form of goal-setting.
Thanks Eric.
pete.
Hey Eric,
My goal is to be consistently earning a min of $700pw online by Dec 31st 2008.
Are you on target with your lesson dates? When will they be finished? Do you feel this is achievable following just your lessons?
Ray
http://www.your-traffic-booster.com
Ray you replied to one of my previouse comments. Could you email me or tell me how to contact you. danderson005@comcast.net
I think that’s on target because I’m definitely hoping to have them all done this year (ok… it’s my goal
).
As far as whether it’s achievable following just my lessons… I’m going to avoid making income claims. One of the main reasons is because, like any “schooling”, what you get out of it largely depends on the effort you put into it, and I can make no guarantees of anyone’s success.
But I will say that your goal certainly seems reasonable.
my goal, build 10,000 leads till the end of the year. Dec 31 that is on average 2000 leads per month!

Thanks for your lessons. They are insightful and you have my attention. This paticular lesson is very key and I plan to use this key to open many doors to success.
Sincerely, Andrea
It’s amazing to look at the numbers from the Harvard MBA study. Clearly setting goals and deadlines is the way to go. I have set and accomplished many goals before, but the key here is that goals without a vision might not take you any further… Thanks for bringing this up here..
Good point. We need the vision to keep us going for the long term.
Thanks Eric - we can’t forget to set REALISTIC goals. When our goals are unrealistic we get discourages. The bar can be move up as we progress.
Goal number 1…Is to payoff all loans by October 30th. (excluding mortgage).
Goal number 2…To make 5,000 US Dollars monthly online by December 30th 2008.
BTW… Eric I have written down these goal setting words before but they always seem to fall apart for reasons beyond my control.
Sounds good Paul. In the next couple of lessons we’ll focus on some things that may help you, which are within your control
My first goal is to apply the “top 20 secrets” from Article Underground by the end of July. I want to “remodel” my website inorder to start generating traffic to it by the end of summer.
My first goal, then, is to start generating unique visitors (70 a day) to my website by Aug. 31st, and hopefully start bringing in an income equal to that of my current parttime job.
Renee, if you want visitors fill in your website name
The website name isn’t the same as your e-mail address, is it?
Yes - goals are very important. Without them, you are less driven and focused. Goals are essential, and you are right, writing them down and keeping them visible makes them MUCH more effective!
Hi Eric
My goal is is to be making at least $4,000 dollars a month from internet marketing while only needing to work 10 hours a week to sustain that level no or before 11/11/08
Thank Again for these lessons

Hi Eric,
My first goal is to reach $500.00 per month income by August 30th.Of course, this time I must find out a profitabe niche to create my own product and to get my own opt-in list
I’m curious what plan will be reasonable to get my above goal.
Petre Tudor
I will be covering both of those topics (niche selection and list building), but you might need to stretch your goal date a bit later if you’re planning on learning everything from these lessons.
My goal is to have written a Sales page for my PLR business by TUESDAY 5pm and have it posted on Warrior forum and completed for the next phase of the project. My PLR is about relationship mending and needs a bit of processing and thinking about. All of that should be completed by the end of Tuesday.

http://succstrat.com
My goal is to earn $10 from the internet with in 60 days from today, 20th September 2008
I have always written down my goals and tended to revisit them every six months or so. I now revisit and revise (if necessary) about every 3 months. What never failed to amaze me was that even when I wrote them down and put them away, when I went back to them I’d find I’d achieved most of them.
Anyway, I have 7 key goals for 2008/9 of which this is one:
Make an additional 7K a month from my businesses (outside my day job) by December 08. My plan for that is well underway.
My goal is to make that first $1 by Sept. 21st.
I am saying it that way, as the goal is to understand the process. In order to replicate it, test it, adapt it and later scale it, I must first make that dollar. OR figure out why I didn’t make it, either!
My goal is to improve my writing skills and finish my ebook by the end of August.
My Goal is learn how to make $1,000 profit via the in less than 2 weeks.
Eric,
I want to thank you for getting me back to the basics with Writing down my Vision and Setting goals. Keep up the great work!
Thanks Dave. Yup… back to the basics
Thank you so much Eric, this lesson is insightful. My goal as regards my activity online is to drive enough traffic to my site and be making $100 per day on Adsense before December.
Hi Eric: Thank you for the lessons. They have really encourage me to take action.
My short term goal is to earn $3000/mo more in addition to my day job income by Oct 31st 2008
My goal is to finish a detailed outline of my ebook in the next 3 weeks (Aug 10th). I’m over half way there but got stuck. A deadline should get me moving again!
My Vision is to become a successful and honest marketer, to be familiar with all the techhnical ins and outs of marketing and be able to communicate them with confidence and clarity, to build an organization of people who will build and promote websites for good quality information and/or good quality, honest products in an honest manner such that we all are successful and prosperous in this world and the next.
My first goal is to build 3 websites with their subpages in areas of interest, IF marketing feasible, and promote such to earn $100.00 per day within 3 months.
Blessings in truth,
Dave
My goal is I can make money with google adsense
My most immediate goal is to build and optimize a new website, linked to my current site: http://www.selfhelpcoaches.com, in order to promote each ebook from my site separately. This is to be done on or before Friday, July 25, 2008.
Attain an online income of $1500.00+ month by November 2008..
Goal:
Create at least one new income stream by July 31, 2008 that I hope makes at least $5 daily.
My goal is to be consistently earning a min of $2000 online by Sept 31st 2008 to be completely independent from social services and from my sons.
I trust in you, Eric
Thanks a lot

Hi Eric!
My goal is to have a site up and running and bringing in earnings of $2000 monthly by the end of the year
Eric,
My goal since I started with internet marketing about 7 months ago, was to create a successful income producing website for each of my children. They are 28,27 and 20. I have had tragic set back the last two days as my 20 year old daughter was killed in an outstate auto accident on Thursday while on vacation. The wake is tomorrow and funeral on Wednesday. She was my heart as we did so many things together. I am hoping I will be able to focus again in the coming days, however, my priorities have drastically changed. Just taking one day at a time is probably my short term goal. Please keep my daughter Kara in your prayers.
Ron
http://www.GemStarGifts.com
I am so sorry about your daughter, and I will say a prayer now.
Eric…
My prayer, dream, goal, vision…name it what you will, is to:
1. Find the key to make my internet empire produce enough income to provide for my wife and I, even if we have to go into an assisted living facility…..
2. Have enough left over to be financially independent….
3. Be able to replace the motorhome and airplane I had to give up….
4. Know the satisfaction of making this work when so many think I am wasting my time….
5. Be in a position to buy new clothes, trade cars, eat out any time we want, and able to do whatever our hearts desire for our kids, grand- kids and great-grandkids.
This may sound extremely ambitious for a guy who has over 125 sites up and running, but I totally believe there is a key that will open the income floodgates. That is what keeps me going month after month.
Bob
I am going to be agressive with my goals:
- At least one website online by July 31
- $1000 by August 30 from one or more websites
- Consistent $1000 per month by October 1
- Consistent $3000 per month by Dec 31
Pretty agressive I know but like a few of the above students, I am 49, just a hair away from 50 and it looks like my retirement investments are not going to pan out the way I want. So, rather than beg the government to take care of me, I’m going to take care of myself.
More than that, this is new to me and looks like a challenge and fun.
Times a wastin’
Went back to read my submission a second time. Left out a few words…should read:
This many sound extremely ambitions for a guy who has over 125 sites up and running…but still is not making ANY money with them…but I totally believe there is a key that will open the income floodgates.
This will make that statement clearer.
Bob
[…] Lesson #14: Setting Goals for Your Business […]
Hi Eric,
Whew, thanks for these lessons, they sure make me focus on things I would have preferred to avoid.
My one goal homework for this lesson is to open up my aweber account and begin listbuilding by the end of July, and have it paying for itself in three months.
This may seem like a small goal, but I`m realizing that each goal carries a bunch of smaller goals. Open account. Choose name. Build a bonus for signup. Write a squeeze page. Figure out the technical aspects of setting up a download page. Do market research for relevant topics. Write a stack of articles for reserve copy. Select good products to promote. Put signup forms in websites. Promote list.
All this from one little goal!
Thanks for the nudge and support,
Colin
The written goals are important, but equal to this is the feeling and emotion put into experiencing those goals or outcomes in the *now*.
Feel as if the goals have already been accomplished or accept them as completed, and it will remove the neediness or *just-out-of-reach* trap that can sabotage your success.
My own fav saying is “Believing its a done deal will seal the deal”, you just go out and close it
Hi Eric,
Once again you cleared a “FUNDAMENTAL” logic missed by most of us.
Goals:
0. Identify a niche market, which I m going to enjoy working on.
1.Need to Create 25 Websites by August 2008
2.Understand how to get traffic to the site & generate sales.
3.Make a minimum of $3000 per month on each site.
4.FOCUS, on What I can do, rather than I want to do.
Thanks
Eric
Hi Eric, Thanks for the lessons! I know I am a couple days behind, but today I will catch up. My goal is to make $3000 online by August 30th, 2008. I have the time because I just had to close my offline business. I also will lose 20 lbs by the same August 30th. Looking forward to the remaining lessons!
Rob
introduce myself to 10 strangersand get their mames by the end of today.
I am naturally shy so this is a challenge!
Hi Eric,
Great Lesson on goal setting.
Thanks for sharing.
My immediate goal is to get a Fulltime job before 31st dec’08.

Really good, helpful info Eric. Very well thought out. You’re a very smart, generous young man. Thanks from Granny. Just kidding…but I am going to be 62 next month, and intend to have my first web site up and running by the end of this year. Susan
My goals are two build at least 2 websites a month and have heavy traffic. I also want to have an income of $8,000 a month by jan 1st 2009. Eric, could you check out my website and tell me what you think, please?
thanks
http://www.identity-ninja.com
My short term goal is to generate $500 profit from the internet in the month of August.
Eric,
The one thing I have always struggled with when coming up with goals is what is “realistic”? I agree with everything you have said, but without some basis on which to base “reality”, I don’t know if my goal is too low like you said, or too pie in the sky. Could you provide some feedback?
Thanks,
Chris
It’s really relative depending on the individual. What may be a realistic goal for you might not be for someone else.
Part of the answer to your question is found in the next lesson: planning.
If you have a reasonable plan to achieve the goal, then it’s probably realistic.
I suggest setting a goal that you think you can hit in 30-90 days.
After 30 days of working toward the goal, via your plan, you should have an idea whether the goal was reasonable or not, and if not, you can adjust it accordingly.
If you’re a newbie ot online biz, and just want a ballpark figure… I’d say a reasonable first goal would be in the range of $500-$1000/month. Then when you hit that, raise it by $1k, and repeat…
Hi Eric,
1. Our short-term goal is identify and research 25 niches, by 8/28/08, to be consider in the launching of our business.
2. Our monetary goal is to be generating $1000 per month by 12/31/08.
Thanks again,
Laura
i want a laptop computer right away, to create my websites and roll the cashhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh into my pocket.
Hi Eric,
I really enjoy going through your lessons. My
short term goal is to complete your lessons first, then plan to start building my online

To your success,

Hi Eric,
My goal is to have one workable website
by the end of this month (august)
Thanks for the great info
My short term goal are;
Thanks Eric!
1. Get $500 Adsense profit by the end of this month.
2. Reach the min paid out for at least one of affiliate project.
3. Win a lottery by end of this month. Ohhh yeah….
Hey Everyone,
Goal number one. Stay up to date with Eric’s Tips.
By definition this is specific, attainable and has a definite schedule.
Goal number two. Complete all supplemental research and education by October 1st. This relates to my computer savvy as apposed to real knowledge. I actually went to school for computer science over 25 years ago, but my current experience is limited to the systems I use at work.
By the way, to that point, we are considering a laptop because we would like to expand our flexibility so as not to be so “landlocked” with our work. Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. All I think I know for sure is that we want one with a nice large screen and integral camera?
Thanks all,
Big Dan
I have used Toshiba, Dell, IBM(Lenovo), and HP.
HP has some really good deals and that is what I am using now. I LOVE the eraser mouse and keyboard on the Thinkpads, but they are too expensive for my taste presently. Some of the Dells have the eraserhead, so I will probably try on my next purchase. Many like Dell because of the extra level of support you can buy with it. My experience has been pretty positive with the support, but not so much with their finance.
God Bless you in your efforts!
Hey everyone,
I’ve gotten behind,so I doubt any will see this.
My Goals are to generate $500/ month by the end of September.
$1000/month by the end of 08.
$3000/month by end of 6/09 and
$5000/month by the end of 2009.
Reassess and create new goals for 2010!!
I want to increase my blog readership to 300 people by 0ct. 31st 2008
My goals are as follows:
Increase my business sales to increase my current income by $500 per week by Dec. 17, 2008 (in other words $2,000 a month raise by Dec. 17).
Increase my RSP by $10,000 by then end of this fiscal year.
Set up a learning account for myself and my family so we can all continue taking seminars and courses on improving financial skills, management, investing, networking and marketing to assure our financial freedom within the next 7 years.
Good series Eric - thank you!!!
This excites me as you are laying out exactly what I need. Thanks for holding my hand.
My goals:
Listen to Eric’s Tips daily.
Complete website #1 by Sept. 1 (been working on this for a while)
Website #2 get up and running by Sept.30
Generate $1000/month online by Dec. 31,2008
I currently make a 6-figure income working for someone else. My immediate goal is to be making $20,000 or above by the end of November at which time I will gladly resign from my 8 to 10 hr day and sometimes 7-days a week job.
Ok my goal is to find the niche market that has eluded me for the last 6 months by the end of December 2008. In the meantime start two sites that together will generate $2000 a month income again by December 2008.
Oh and to continue with my healthy eating plan of writing down what I eat and exercising 5 days a week to lose 5 kilos by December 2008.
Goals:
Short term:
Continue listening to Eric!
Make a consistent $100/day profit by 9/08
Medium Term:
Make a consistent $500/day profit by 12/08
Cheers,
Joe
