LESSON #14: Setting Goals for Your Business
In the previous lesson, we talked about getting a vision for your business.
A vision is the big picture of where you want to go. You need to have a vision, otherwise you won’t be motivated, and you won’t have a clear direction for your business.
However, a vision needs goals and plans to go along with it…

Main points:
1) they should be specific (measurable)
2) they should be serious, but attainable
3) they should have a deadline
Action steps:
1) Write down one goal, and put it somewhere near your computer.
(Also please post it in the comments below)
It should be specific, attainable, and it should have a deadline.
Keep in mind that you will need to keep setting new goals for yourself as you build your business. As you continue with these lessons, it will become more apparent what your goals should be, so write them down frequently as you go through the process.
Now you will need to develop a plan for reaching your goals, and I’ll be talking about that in the next lesson.

Goal setting!
A myriad of thoughts enter my head as to what to set myself as a first attainable goal.Today is 19th July, by the way it’s my youngest son’s birthday,he’s 29! How the time has flown! For those of you that are parents I am sure you will all feel that sense of time having past so quickly especially at times like this.This ‘time’ element and it’s passing re-enforces what Eric comments about setting a deadline for me.The ‘back burner’ has an awful lot of my ambitions hopes and dreams on it!
Time then to bring them forward and make the Vision real; I see before me a ladder,a peculiar ladder, without any rungs!I am now holding this first rung(my first goal) in my hand;
‘BY 31st of December 2008 my bank account will show £250 (about $500) in the BLACK.’
It stands at present £2250 ($4,500) in the RED.Being clear of debt in my bank account means that I have one less worry to distract from my vision,the first rung on my ladder of dreams the first block of my jigsaw in place.I can’t remember the last time my bank account was in the black at the turn of the New Year, and am I 50!So I guess am saying ‘HELLO!’to the concept of that alien being.. Money management! I have written a plan out to achieve this number and await the next lesson to see if it needs adjusting or not.
It’s not a wild goal and by placing it here it will serve as a constant reminder to me of where my future fortunes turned for the better.

A vision is basically a mental picture (which can be written in words) of the end result of what you want to achieve. A vision is generally ongoing. It acts to guide you throughout your daily activities, and steer you in the direction you want to go.
A goal is a specific milestone along the way toward your vision. A goal has an end point. Once you reach it, it’s done.

Thanks for clearing up vision verses goal.I’m one of the guilty ones that was getting the two mixed together. It’s like a little light bulb turned on after watching this lesson. Although I have a BIGGER vision of being independently wealthy, a couple stepping stones I’ve set as longtime goals would be:
Pay my Townhouse off($200,000) by 02/15/2014
Work part-time at the Hospital by 02/15/2015
PS…hopefully more goals will come to mind(as you stated) as I develop my business.

Sure thing. Yeah it’s easy to mix them, as I do too.
My first goal is to make $10,000 until 15 December 2008. Doing so, I’ll accomplish the goal in the vision to be debt free until the end of year 2008. I think will be very hard to do it but this goal is very special for me - my debts are time sensitive. I have to do it, and the date is 15 December 2008.
If I’ll go this, implicitly I’ll accomplish the second goal to get the stress of money out of my system which will be absolutely great.
Now this can be view more as a part of the plan, but I’ll make it as a sub-goal of the first goal because it is my week part: I have to increase my list with 1000 name until end of Dec 2008.

Oh the video engine was undergoing maintenance, it should be working fine now. The video explains the concept and it is a Social Media MasterMind Event. So I am marketing word of mouth (Tweet to Tweet) to marketers using Twitter. Hence TweetFest! No-One has done it YET, and Twitter has become THE Social Marketing Tool, because of it’s micro-blog realtime capabilities. It has become a REAL Marketing Movement, I know you weren’t into Twitter a while back… but remember you said SOMETIMES you need to reassess!

I really do encourage the goal setting techniques that you suggest. Immediate and long term are what makes your program work. Zig Ziglar once told me that if you don’t set your 3 levels of goals, you can’t see where you are going and you will never know when you are there.

My vision is to exceed powerseller status with ebay within 2 years after which I collect my super and retire from my present employment. As for goals, when I am designing a new product (which I love doing) I put a time limit on it e.g. a range of clocks to be completed by the end of the week etc. or I might say to myself that certain new products be added to my website, http://www.corgidogworld.com by the end of a particular month. Hope this makes sense. I enjoy reading the lessons.

As far as whether it’s achievable following just my lessons… I’m going to avoid making income claims. One of the main reasons is because, like any “schooling”, what you get out of it largely depends on the effort you put into it, and I can make no guarantees of anyone’s success.
But I will say that your goal certainly seems reasonable.

It’s amazing to look at the numbers from the Harvard MBA study. Clearly setting goals and deadlines is the way to go. I have set and accomplished many goals before, but the key here is that goals without a vision might not take you any further… Thanks for bringing this up here..

Thanks Eric - we can’t forget to set REALISTIC goals. When our goals are unrealistic we get discourages. The bar can be move up as we progress.
Goal number 1…Is to payoff all loans by October 30th. (excluding mortgage).
Goal number 2…To make 5,000 US Dollars monthly online by December 30th 2008.
BTW… Eric I have written down these goal setting words before but they always seem to fall apart for reasons beyond my control.

My first goal is to apply the “top 20 secrets” from Article Underground by the end of July. I want to “remodel” my website inorder to start generating traffic to it by the end of summer.
My first goal, then, is to start generating unique visitors (70 a day) to my website by Aug. 31st, and hopefully start bringing in an income equal to that of my current parttime job.

Yes - goals are very important. Without them, you are less driven and focused. Goals are essential, and you are right, writing them down and keeping them visible makes them MUCH more effective!

My challenge begins tomrrow, July 21st, and goes until September 2nd. I have 42 days to accomplish this massive goal. I’ll be formulating shorterm goals to accomplish the big goal.

I have always written down my goals and tended to revisit them every six months or so. I now revisit and revise (if necessary) about every 3 months. What never failed to amaze me was that even when I wrote them down and put them away, when I went back to them I’d find I’d achieved most of them.
Anyway, I have 7 key goals for 2008/9 of which this is one:
Make an additional 7K a month from my businesses (outside my day job) by December 08. My plan for that is well underway.
My goal is to make that first $1 by Sept. 21st.
I am saying it that way, as the goal is to understand the process. In order to replicate it, test it, adapt it and later scale it, I must first make that dollar. OR figure out why I didn’t make it, either!
My goal is to improve my writing skills and finish my ebook by the end of August.
My Goal is learn how to make $1,000 profit via the in less than 2 weeks.

My goal since I started with internet marketing about 7 months ago, was to create a successful income producing website for each of my children. They are 28,27 and 20. I have had tragic set back the last two days as my 20 year old daughter was killed in an outstate auto accident on Thursday while on vacation. The wake is tomorrow and funeral on Wednesday. She was my heart as we did so many things together. I am hoping I will be able to focus again in the coming days, however, my priorities have drastically changed. Just taking one day at a time is probably my short term goal. Please keep my daughter Kara in your prayers.

My prayer, dream, goal, vision…name it what you will, is to:
1. Find the key to make my internet empire produce enough income to provide for my wife and I, even if we have to go into an assisted living facility…..
2. Have enough left over to be financially independent….
3. Be able to replace the motorhome and airplane I had to give up….
4. Know the satisfaction of making this work when so many think I am wasting my time….
5. Be in a position to buy new clothes, trade cars, eat out any time we want, and able to do whatever our hearts desire for our kids, grand- kids and great-grandkids.
This may sound extremely ambitious for a guy who has over 125 sites up and running, but I totally believe there is a key that will open the income floodgates. That is what keeps me going month after month.

I am going to be agressive with my goals:
- At least one website online by July 31
- $1000 by August 30 from one or more websites
- Consistent $1000 per month by October 1
- Consistent $3000 per month by Dec 31
Pretty agressive I know but like a few of the above students, I am 49, just a hair away from 50 and it looks like my retirement investments are not going to pan out the way I want. So, rather than beg the government to take care of me, I’m going to take care of myself.
More than that, this is new to me and looks like a challenge and fun.

Whew, thanks for these lessons, they sure make me focus on things I would have preferred to avoid.
My one goal homework for this lesson is to open up my aweber account and begin listbuilding by the end of July, and have it paying for itself in three months.
This may seem like a small goal, but I`m realizing that each goal carries a bunch of smaller goals. Open account. Choose name. Build a bonus for signup. Write a squeeze page. Figure out the technical aspects of setting up a download page. Do market research for relevant topics. Write a stack of articles for reserve copy. Select good products to promote. Put signup forms in websites. Promote list.
All this from one little goal!

The written goals are important, but equal to this is the feeling and emotion put into experiencing those goals or outcomes in the *now*.
Feel as if the goals have already been accomplished or accept them as completed, and it will remove the neediness or *just-out-of-reach* trap that can sabotage your success.
My own fav saying is “Believing its a done deal will seal the deal”, you just go out and close it

The one thing I have always struggled with when coming up with goals is what is “realistic”? I agree with everything you have said, but without some basis on which to base “reality”, I don’t know if my goal is too low like you said, or too pie in the sky. Could you provide some feedback?

It’s really relative depending on the individual. What may be a realistic goal for you might not be for someone else.
Part of the answer to your question is found in the next lesson: planning.
If you have a reasonable plan to achieve the goal, then it’s probably realistic.
I suggest setting a goal that you think you can hit in 30-90 days.
After 30 days of working toward the goal, via your plan, you should have an idea whether the goal was reasonable or not, and if not, you can adjust it accordingly.
If you’re a newbie ot online biz, and just want a ballpark figure… I’d say a reasonable first goal would be in the range of $500-$1000/month. Then when you hit that, raise it by $1k, and repeat…

Goal number one. Stay up to date with Eric’s Tips.
By definition this is specific, attainable and has a definite schedule.
Goal number two. Complete all supplemental research and education by October 1st. This relates to my computer savvy as apposed to real knowledge. I actually went to school for computer science over 25 years ago, but my current experience is limited to the systems I use at work.
By the way, to that point, we are considering a laptop because we would like to expand our flexibility so as not to be so “landlocked” with our work. Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. All I think I know for sure is that we want one with a nice large screen and integral camera?

I have used Toshiba, Dell, IBM(Lenovo), and HP.
HP has some really good deals and that is what I am using now. I LOVE the eraser mouse and keyboard on the Thinkpads, but they are too expensive for my taste presently. Some of the Dells have the eraserhead, so I will probably try on my next purchase. Many like Dell because of the extra level of support you can buy with it. My experience has been pretty positive with the support, but not so much with their finance.

I currently make a 6-figure income working for someone else. My immediate goal is to be making $20,000 or above by the end of November at which time I will gladly resign from my 8 to 10 hr day and sometimes 7-days a week job.
Ok my goal is to find the niche market that has eluded me for the last 6 months by the end of December 2008. In the meantime start two sites that together will generate $2000 a month income again by December 2008.

My second goal is to have my squeeze page done by the 18th and my third goal is to have my free report that I am offering completed by the 19th. The final goal for the week is to have the website go live on the 20th.
My goals for this year 2008 is to set up my offline business by end of september;complete the books am working on, and set up a website to promote them by end of october.Other goals include a Bible college course for personal development
My goal at this point in time is to have my web site designed by October 10th 2008. I am writing this on September 24th 2008.

My goal is to finish this course and not go on to the next great thing. I’m aiming for 5,000 per month. I have a picture of a Cessna 172 in my mind.
I did not start getting these lessons until Nov and did not start reading them until Dec. I have been watching/reading them multiple times a day. It was easier on the week end since I work full time during the week.
I have heard that goals should be set high. If you reach for the sun, you might reach the moon.

In my most productive efforts, I always had a “checklist” for each day….and after writing down everything I hoped to accomplish I’d prioritize each item by numbering them as to importance. Then I’d make an effort to accomplish as many items as I could. Then, take the unfinished list to re-arrange for the next day in the same way.
Your “whiteboard” reminded me of just how much more I could accomplish with this method of handling “what’s next.” As I recall, it took very little time to “write down” these daily goals and it made a world of difference, just as you said it did for the Harvard grads in your lesson.
So…one best chosen effort every day (except Sunday)to begin my marketing plans. As things progress multiple tasks will be easier one then another, on a written checklist.
Tomorrow I’m opening a checking account for my new business, then a new merchant account to “monetize” future sales on my new site.
A journey of a thousand miles begins…

I’m very favorably impressed by your lessons and I understand the importance of setting a goals, but if you don’t yet have a clue what is reasonable and attainable how can you set a reasonable goal? I can say I first want to set up my website, build a list and get traffic to the website and make a profit of $1000 by August 31. but since I don’t know how I’m going to go about achieving this goal, I don’t know if this is reasonable or a shot to the moon! I have to have some more info on how to achieve a goal.

Hello Eric, I have found your lessons very enlightening. I am not as young as you. I have done this before but I failed to continue writing and making bigger and more defined goals. I have masterminded in the past and completed all my goals and then due to my own fault I lost every thing. I have learned a lot thus far. I will before the end of every year take out my old goals and cross off what I have done and rewrite the ones I have not completed and make them very exact and change them and date them. My goal has been to pay off my second mortgage and have enough money to pay for an apartment in Texas to visit my 5 grandchildren several months thru the year. I am a very hard worker and once someone shows me what to do, I can run with it. My vision is to always have enough money to help out others when they are in a hardship. First goal - learn everything I can from Eric’s tips. I find it hard to to set goals with deadlines for a buisness with the variable of not knowing when the information that is req’d for us to get started will be presented.
However as soon as we have the information we need we are set to begin our first adventure and all the players are on board and ready to start the game.
Our Mission: To function as an Internet Marketing team that will revise an exisiting website that ranks low on the search engines and has generated 0 profit in three years.
The goal: Turn exisiting Website into a profitable Website Buisness.
The Problem: The exisiting site is a nice buisness greeting card that is hard to find on the internet. And, offers nothing for sale but only suggests that she has service that will make a differance but without a way to close the deal or sell anything else. In the information age most people are not willing to wait two months while you work them into your schedule.
Owners statement: The website is three years old and no-one has ever been able to tell me why it does not generate income. Thank-you for being honest.
Solution: To re-establish its ranking on the search engines and turn it into a profitable Website buisness. Through affiliate links, as well as products for sale in her niche marketplace, and give her the ability to close the deal on her seminars through various selling techniques.

The way I understand the process at HomeCash is that I cannot even click on the products being offered to see if they are honest enough to deliver what they promise. What can I do?
I am very pleased with the suppliers I have for my home decor products. I have ordered things for myself and been very pleased. I have also completed some eBay orders with these items and my customers have been very pleased with the products. I have 100% positive feedback, which says quite a bit! I want this same confidence in my informational website. If I can’t do honest business, I do not want to do business at all. However, without a lucrative business, my life suffers. I need to know I’m in a WIN-WIN situation.

Due to the significance of this topic there is no if’s or but’s, I understand the gravity of the message in the difference between the 97% (little money) and the 3% (ten times more) due to goal setting. I know within that if I do not do the tasks that I know I need to do, then my business will suffer. I also having to control my attention and direction and slowly achieving those crucial steps in forming a presence online.

My first economic goal is so far away: I missed the 400$ income as I’m still struggling to publish my first site.

Eric, I am a firm believer in written goals but that Harvard study you cited has been debunked as using fraudulent data. The author, Srully Blotnick, made up the results (just Google his name to read the history). Well, I’m in Colorado, as you are and just heard the news tonight that they passed the law about an internet sales tax. Sounds too scary to me as a future IMr, how bad can it turn for a Colorado affiliate? I’m not sure if I understand it correctly, just minor complication or a major thing? Please give your opinion. As you may know I am in Colorado too. I do think it’s an annoyance, but I do not think it will be too bad.
On the bad side, Amazon already closed my affiliate account which really stinks. If other companies follow suit, it could get worse. If that happens though, there will be a revolt. Affiliates will start registering their businesses in other states, or SOMETHING. (I think that is what Amazon is hoping. Their excuse that it’s too complicated to collect tax is BS. They are one of the most technological companies in the world. They are trying to send a message… at the expense of their CO affiliates)
But I don’t think it will come to that. Most companies (including Clickbank) are willing to comply with the law, and we will probably see more states pass similar laws in the future.
And from what I understand, the burden is really on the vendor to collect the sales tax, so technically it does not affect how we run our business as an affiliate.

Well, I have already purchased my domains, set up my hosting, and done research necessary for traffic for my niches–maybe getting ahead of myself. But it is a good idea to plan out your traffic and linking strategies ahead of time. It can help build your sites/blogs better, right?
My first medium short-range goal is to get busy and get all of my sites up and running so I can start slowly adding content to them. I have several I want to get up and running, but for my immediate short-term goal, the one that I think is the most targeted should come first. I would like to have that site designed, up and running, and in Google’s 1st page of organic results for the keyword phrase by June 15, 2010 so I can enjoy some summer activities with my daughter during summer break. Even if I only get up a simple site that I can improve on after the deadline, it will be a worth while target.
In the meantime, I am going to simultaneously investigate blogging for money and writing copy for people for some immediate cash flow–since I have a talent for writing.
Oh! (how easily I become distracted) I also am an affiliate for a guy that has a GREAT product that I love using. Another immediate short term goal I will set is this: For that product, I will do some keyword research and then buy a domain–hopefully using the keywords. Hello Eric, once again I would like to thank you for these amazing lessons, they are AWESOME! I have written down goals before, and I have even bought a course from Zig Ziglar, but when I do write them down, I forget to keep looking at them and then I don’t achieve them, but this time I will write them down and make sure that I look at them. I also will write them on a 3×5 card and also put them into my blackberry phone.
Anyway, my goal is to have accumulated $5k by May 21, 2010, so I can have enough money to buy plane tickets for my Son to come up here to Pa to visit with his Grandma and I. To achieve this goal, I will learn everything I need to know to get my Internet business up and running by April 20, 2010, and to also start to build a targeted list of prospects in whatever niche that I choose to pursue, but that is my main goal for now, but I know that their will be many more in the near future.:-)

Sorry to be a party pooper but the Harvard (also often quoted as being done at Yale) study never existed. It was fabricated and has been regurgitated many times, even by Tony Robbins I believe and other top people.
However finding the right Goal Setting method is very important. The success keys I learned from qualifying in Hypnotherapy and NLP are: Decide on your goal, really get associated with the pain of not realising them and the pleasure of getting them (pain is our greatest driving force), ACT ON THEM, keep checking if you are on target, and keep correcting your actions until you get there.
Be careful of the “realistic goals” limitation. Your goals have to be big enough to really inspire you, especially to overcome the inevitable obstacles on the way. Go after your goals with passion and make sure they align with your core values and include an element of greater good of others in them.
One useful technique is to create a “dreamboard” of pictures of whatever your goal is: the car you want, the house of your dreams, or whatever it is. Cut these out, and pin them on a board in front of your computer so your sub-conscious is continually seeing them and embedding them in your mind - it can then continue to work in the background to find ways of achieving what it is seeing.

I can not beleive I am writting to you again, the lesson was great, the messege very clear, I have been exsposed to goal-setting most all my life and been told to write them down, I’m going to hate to say this but I thought I could just keep them in my head. Well they must have stayed there because they never came to pass, that is going to change right NOW thanks to this lesson and last. Seeing the difference of goal-setting and VISION opened my eyes. It’s always good to keep the vision in front you. You might want to try using post-it-notes or something similar. You could put reminders on your bathroom mirror, steering wheel, refrigerator door, or other frequently seen item.
It’s also good to cut out all of the distractions. It’s amazing how much freer you are to achieve success, when you determine the obstacles to your goals and remove them.

from gary i have been in the closeout business for thirty years maybe that could be my niche i dont know i do have a passion for magic how would i do somthing with that i had a kiosk in vegas selling magic tricks but paying 5000 a month for two kiosks knocked me out of business i had to shut them down i dont know i want to make money on line need a little help here

My GOAL: Earn £100 per day by June 5th 2011. A month from today!
Just finished lesson 14. My goal is to get to lesson 20 by sometimes tonight. Starting tomorrow to get up first thing and do devotion. Practice on piano for 30 minutes each day.
My first goal is to make about 5,000 with an eBook on a website that I make from homestead.
That goal can be broken down into smaller goals,
1. Get about 10 dollars and print my eBook out at staples and revise it about 3 times. Then completely finish my eBook and turn it into a PDF.
2. Get some more start up capital of about 50 to 100 dollars and put it on a debit card.
3. Sign up for homestead.
4. Make a sales page and a thank you page for it. And make about 10,000 total to start.
5. Do all of this by the end of this year.

My first goal is to have my first affiliate marketing website up and running by December 2011. Earlier will be better, I’ll try. That means from now I must take the steps to set up a website, write my sales letter, look for affiliate companies like Amazon and get started. I am looking at my first income of $500 by end of January 2012.
My second goal that I will work on simultaneously is to develop my ebook and have my first ebook website up and running by January 2012. I want to earn at least $1000 a month by March 2012 from this website and $2500 per month by June 2012.
A most important goal I forgot to mention is to accelrate my learning process. Eric did a grat job providing in an earlier lesson a list of things one has to learn. I now realise that part of my pproblem has been failing to make enough effort to learn these computer skills that I need resulting in me suffering from what I call “technophobia.” My goal is to overcome this handicasp by learning.

I would like to know if I should start learning spreadshhet now or can it wait.
I started lesson 1 I believe 3 days ago and am now on lesson 14. I go over the terms 3-4 times a day. My goals are to learn spreadsheet iby 10-5-2011 and to make 2000$ on line by 10-24-2011. any wordsw of wisdom will help and I would be thankful for.Steven Hull
While there are an infinite amount of things that you can continually learn about spreadsheets, you can always start small!
Why not set a goal to learn several things about spreadsheets, before a certain date!
My goal is to watch all the Eric’s Tip’s Lesson’s and set mini goals for completion of all the action steps by December 31, 2011.
My first goal is to earn my first $100 online by December 31, 2011, proving to myself that I can do it.
Pay my brother, Rusty, $25,000 by October 31, 2012. He lent money to my franchise business when we were struggling. Ultimately, the business failed and he lost his money. I want to repay him.

Today is November 29, 2011. I am setting a goal to have my website up and running by the week-end. I will continue to watch my training videos, one at a time, performing the action steps in order. I will not use any other training modules at this time (because the confusion is paralyzing me) and I will commit myself to small steps every day. I am planning to generate enough income (at least $500.00) to cover my costs thus far by the end of December, 2011.

I am following and plan to earn $2,000 end of February 2012.
My initial goal is to have an internet business generating a solid and recurring income of at least $1000 a month profit by March, 2012. That will also allow me to spend less time running my ebay store and focusing more on internet marketing. I should then be able to pay off my car loan by June, 2012 and have at least $5000 in the bank.
Hi Eric Just have one minor goal which is to get organized. I am A.D.D. and find it so hard to stay with one thing. So I went to my neighbor who has a very clean home, she is organized. Her kids are well mannered. And she is a J.W. I asked how do you do it, and she told me that she lives by a schedule. She says she couldn’t do it unless she followed it.
For example her week always starts where she gets up one hour before the kids. She showers makes her bed and gets breakfast ready.
The kids make their beds and get dressed before meal. Then they are off to school she cleans up the dishes.
Monday is her house cleaning day.
Tuesday is her laundry day.
Wednesday is a day she bake pies, cookies, enough homemade bread for a week for the family.
The kids have their chores and deliver newspapers. Thursday is a day for something else.
Friday she shops etc.
So she is very disciplined. They both work. They don’t let their wants exceed their needs. She also uses coupons or flyers to plan the meals for the week. As they always have dinner together as a family.
They take there kids out once a week to bowling swimming or recreation. And they occasionally entertain,even on their small income.
Mondays is always been their family night together to discuss important family issues that need addressing. and a night to play board games and card games. “It’s easier to work around unforeseen circumstances when you already have a system in place.” She said.
So my goal is write a schedule down on what day I will do what, and try to stick to it.She also mentioned that it can take sometimes three weeks to get into a good routine, which requires self discipline.
She advised me not to expect perfection from myself, because no one is perfect and we all make mistakes. She knows my attention is terrible.
She helped me quit smoking.I quit in three weeks and have never looked back. Sometimes in goal setting it helps to have someone backing you up even when you feel like a failure. When you write things down, your more prone to stick to it.
So That is what I will be doing as a short goal.Because if we get little things done, we won’t get discouraged and quit. One vital step can sometimes start off very small. Who wants to give up before you start.
So I am going to buy myself a calendar and put on it days I do laundry days I shop and if I can’t always follow it I won’t give up, I will try again. That way I can schedule other dates around the important ones. dates like doctor appointments. Instead of allowing other appointments interfere with my life. that way I can have more time to learn about internet marketing. I need time set aside to do that. But first I have to get my own life-style organized.
