LESSON #84: Over 400 Free Web Traffic Sources

By | June 5, 2012

We’ve been talking about web traffic since lesson #72 and we still have a few more traffic lessons remaining.

In this lesson I cover more than 400 websites where you can potentially get free web traffic (plus I give you links to some directories with a combined total of more than 700 additional sources listed… so there’s actually well over 1000 traffic sources here!).

(Watch this video – it may take a minute to load after clicking it…)

ANNOUNCEMENT: I’ve released a new course, which goes into more depth on some of the free traffic methods from this lesson, PLUS shows you how to make money from that traffic… even if you don’t have a website. The course is called: “NO COST INCOME STREAM“. This is something that people have been asking for, for a long time.

Outline of this lesson:

  • REMEMBER: Most marketers will have a better chance of long term success if they focus on the fundamentals of web traffic instead of all the other stuff. (This lesson is NOT the fundamentals)

  • Any “tactic” could disappear at any time. We’ve recently seen this happen as a result of the Google Penguin update.

  • WARNING: A lot of what I cover in this lesson could potentially hurt your search engine rankings, especially if you do it aggressively, or if it’s not balanced with a lot of high quality linking. Be sure to watch the video if you are concerned about SEO. (I go into more detail throughout the video)

    Sources of Free Web Traffic:

  • Forum Marketing

    – Join the biggest forums in your niche.
    – Search Google for “discussions” in your niche.
    – Establish yourself as an authority by providing valuable posts to the forum.
    – Answer people’s questions.
    – Have a good signature, with an enticing link, such as a link to a freebie.

    Forum Search Engines:
    boardreader.com
    omgili.com
    forumssearch.com
boardtracker.com (used to be my favorite, but it’s been under construction for awhile)

    Forum Directory:
    directory.big-boards.com

  • Blogs

    – Blogs (and particularly WordPress blogs on your own domain) are well suited for SEO.

    – I recommend this web host for 1-click WordPress installation. Coupon code: ERICSTIPSCOUPON (See also lesson #24 and lesson #33)

    – Best way to get blog traffic is to create incredible content.
    – Create “link bait” (See lesson #78)
    – Write something highly controversial.
    – Utilize trackback links as a form of conversation marketing with other bloggers.
    – Particpate in blog carnivals. See blogcarnival.com
    – Host your own blog carnival.
    – Leave comments on other peoples’ blogs. (Do NOT spam or use automation)
    – Expand your reach through RSS feed syndication.

  • Reminder about free traffic tactics from lesson #67:

    – Giveaway Events (aka JV giveaways)
    – Thank You Page Ad Swaps
    – Host a Contest

  • Give Out Website Awards

-Have a nice little graphic created.
-Award it to all the top sites in your niche.
-Give them a snippet of code to post the award on their site, with a link back to your site.

  • News & Publicity

    – Be newsworthy.
    – If you have a successful online business, that may be newsworthy!
    – Contact your local newspaper.
    – Conduct a publicity stunt! (Can result in millions of dollars worth of publicity)
    – Do NOT do anything illegal or hurtful.

  • Word of Mouth Marketing (aka Buzz)

There’s compelling evidence that Word of Mouth marketing is the most powerful form of marketing in our society.

    – Provide good service.
    – Underpromise and overdeliver.
    – Be controversial.
    – Have a tell-a-friend form.
    – Put your link in the signature of all your emails.
    – Make your customers feel valued.
    Build a relationship with customers.
    – Be buzzworthy!

(See video for examples of Viral Email)

    Action steps:

    1) Decide whether you want to focus on the “free traffic” route.

    2) Decide whether SEO is a priority for you, and keep that in mind as you employ tactics that may positively or negatively impact your SEO.

    3) If you decide to employ any of these traffic strategies, choose one and start with it.

In the next lesson we’ll be looking at affiliate driven traffic.

As always, you are welcome to post your questions and comments below 🙂

    Have a great day!

This is the list that I am looking for. However, my question is, how do you manage to make a link with all these 400 sites? How long does it take for a VA to make links to all these?

Can you tell me about something I found out about called “Infographics”, because I want to make my diagram of about scientists making the economy collapse by hiding gold with the cloaking device?

      Reply
    4. Jack

This one vince is more for making the free people come to your site because they go away from the other site they were on, but I guess also you probably have to put on a link to. One thing which I do is to try to use a backwards rotation cycle for going through lists like this one to make free traffic, but I just started so I don’t know about how it works yet.

If you don’t mind my suggestion, I have clients where I do 30-50 backlinks per month for them. It is a way to organize and commit. You will find that if you commit to a specific minimum per month, you will exceed your goals over time. If you don’t, you will end up far short of your goals and, of course, traffic, or the lack thereof could be the price you pay for failing to stick to a consistent goal.

I explain in the video a little more about how to use the sites. Many of them are “submission” sites, where you can submit various things (documents, ebooks, etc.). How long would it take is really variable. I would recommend focusing on submitting good content, rather than merely getting as many links as you can. As I explained in the lesson, the value of many of these links for SEO is zero.

Infographics are a very trendy type of content right now, due to the ease of sharing them on sites like Pinterest and Google+. You can convey a lot of data in a powerful way using simple infographics. So yes they would be a good form of link bait and potentially free traffic!

      Hi,
We have around 800,000 in Alexa ranking at the moment, and we have only below 40 backlinks. Although we are not sure how did we get that ranking, do you think that trying the above backlinks would damage our business? We are targeting only clients who need graphics and the site is visited only by them,so ranking has no such importance. Please advise

Eric, thanks but! Some of this is very worthwhile (thank you for that)but a lot of it is junk traffic which is a big waste of time. Most of us don’t have enough time to take advantage of the worthwhile traffic sources why would we even want to know about the junk and questionable stuff.

Thanks Eric, you always provide us with great value lessons.

I just need a favor from you because you’re the only person I trust. I came a cross a coaching program called “DotComSecrets X” by Russell Brunson, and I registered for 30 days for $1 only, and next month they will start charging $97/month. Can you give an advice if I should continue or if it’s worth it or not?

Anyway, I’m looking forward to join your coaching club soon 🙂

I got cross eyed half way down the list and what a list it is! It’ll keep anyone busy for weeks if not months. Thanks for putting it together and sharing it so generously.

It really depends on whether you’re going to do the work and make it worthwhile. I have heard some success stories coming from Russell’s program, so I think it has good potential. I also have a coaching club at $97/month. Unfortunately some people sign up and never do anything. They don’t follow the lessons, they don’t ask any questions, and they don’t show up for the webinars. For them, it’s not worth it. But if you put in the effort, it is more than worth it. I would say the same for Russell’s program and almost any coaching program.

Right. I make this point very clear in the video, and also talk about the low quality of many of the sources. That’s part of why I packed them all into just one lesson out of 100, even though I could have spent several lessons covering these sources.

As far as why you would want to know about it? I seem to have a lot of readers who are insistent on “free” methods, so they are interested. Also, all of the above can be outsourced.

It is important to watch the video to have the proper perspective of why I covered so many sources in this lesson, and how they compare to the other traffic methods from the other lessons.

This is a comprehensive list! Great advice to pick just one method and work it for awhile.

I like to use tracking links so I can tell which free traffic method is giving the best results for a particular niche.

Well, the most important thing that I’ve learned from you is not internet marketing itself. I wouldn’t even continue watching ur great marketing lessons and actually take action if you didn’t teach us first how to get a vision, setup goals, be self motivated, and be committed to succeed.

By the way, the first thing I did before joining Russell’s 30 days $1 program, I searched for a review and I saw yours about his previous coaching program “DotComSecrets”,so I went ahead and joined without even thinking.
I thought if his previous program is positively reviewed by you then this one might be good as well.

Anyway, I think if I’m going to pay $97 for a coaching program then I will be glad to join yours. I feel that I’m committed to follow, and learn from you. And I will be definitely confident to recommend others to join it too 🙂

      Thanks,
      Mike

This list is amazing. Thank you for compiling this. I am going to have to set up a schedule and focus on a few of these at a time. Do you have any suggestions of which ones I should focus on first?

      Hello Adrienne,

That would depend partly on how you want to build your business. If you want to get a better foothold on long-term SEO, it would probably be best to stay away from the link-sharing and traffic exchange sites.

However, if immediate traffic is more important, you might want to be more open to all of the strategies, and find the ones that are best suited to you, and your time!

      Hello Eric,

This is a gigantic collection of free websites and strategies that can boost one’s traffic with great speed. But I can assure you that 80 of marketers are not in the least ready to use these wonderful information you have provided here.
But I just hope that they will find the time to do all these except they can get them totally automated at minimal costs. What do you think Eric?

I submitted a ticket yesterday to find out if the offer could possibly be extended until until Friday. I don’t have the money to take advantage of the offer until I get paid. Is that at all possible? I’d really like to take advantage of that great offer. When I submitted the ticket tht recommended that I post a comment to your blog.

      Thanks,

Thanks brother about the effort. However only 2%-3% people who read it will take some advantage due to the information overload. Really, it isn’t your fault. A common behavior for over 96% of internet guys.
